APA Advanced Framing Guide

Advanced Framing Overview Schematic

APA, The Engineered Wood Association, developed an advanced framing guide that helps builders reduce lumber use. Besides saving material, reducing lumber use supports improved performance by reducing thermal bridges from framing members.

There is  low hanging fruit such as using 24" centers, California (two stud) corners, and properly framed openings that reduce header size and jack and cripple studs. More involved efforts include using single top plates and aligning at least one side of fenestration rough openings with the default framing spacing.
